The Winona Mill

If you camp at the Cottonwood campground, you're less than a ten-minute walk from the Winona Mill site. Although there's not much left there to see today, it's well worth the hike to visit the ruins and imagine what once was. Also, the wash that runs north-south in front of the mill site contains evidence of habitation of some duration. It might also be the only spot in J Tree where you can see Eucalyptus Trees.

The Outcast of Turkey Flats

It was Thanksgiving weekend and I was in the area, what better time to visit Turkey Flats? It had been on my list of places to check out, along with the Sand Dune, for quite a while and the timing was perfect, as was the weather. I pulled into the parking area at the Pinto Mountain Backcountry Board and decided to check out the information signs before heading out into the desert.

Pinto Basin

Pinto Basin

I pulled over at this roadside exhibit along Pinto Basin Road. It's great that the NPS puts these out to give us travelers a bit of a clue as to what we're looking at as we drive through the park.  Looking out over this basin, it's difficult to imagine it with a river flowing through it. I've ventured out into the Pinto Basin a few times, it's a hot, dry place nowadays.
